Where Do People Go When They Die?

Inasmuch as it appears that some are “destined to live” (Isaiah 4:3) and to “escape” (Daniel 12:1), the outcome of where each person goes upon death appears to depend on whether the person’s name is written in God’s book of life (Rev. 20:12, Daniel 12:1).

  •   The full name of the book is “book of life of the Lamb who was slaughtered.” Rev. 13:8
  •   The “worthy” victors will not have their names erased from the book of life. Rev. 3:5

o      Concern that erasure is even mentioned—a suggestion that a name could be erased. Psalm 69:28

o      A parallel to Satan who was “the seal of perfection” (Ezekiel 28:12) and the “anointed guardian cherub” appointed by God (Ezekiel 28:14) who was “blameless … until wickedness was found” in him (Ezekiel 28:15)—eventually becoming “an object of horror” that will “never exist again.” Ezekiel 28:19

  •  Names appear to be recorded in the book of life from the foundation of the world. Rev. 17:8.

o   This is possible, considering that God is not bound by time.

Before Christ’s Death: Sheol/Hades/the Pit/Lower Parts of the Earth/Underworld

  • The pit is likely the “bottomless pit” or the “underworld” or the “abyss” that is covered by the depths of the oceans. Ezekiel 26:19-20, Ezekiel 28:8
  • There are places within Sheol/the Pit that are lower than others. Ezekiel 32:23

 A. If the person’s name is written in the book of life: Abraham’s side. Luke 16:22

  • Considered to be a temporary habitation within Sheol where a person would not remain forever. Psalm 86:13, Psalm 30:3

o   King David, prophetically speaking about Jesus, said that God would not abandon him to Sheol … to see decay. Psalm 16:8-11

o   From here, a person may via Jesus as the “path of life” find escape to the presence of God where there is abundant joy and eternal pleasures.  Psalm 16:11

  •  Here a person avoids “crossing the river of death” where his or her soul enters into the Pit.  See Job 33:18 (statement of Elihu—the only person whose statements were validated by God).

 B. If the person’s name is not written in the book of life: the Pit/Hades in torment of flames of fire. Luke 16:19-31; Matthew 11:23, Job 33:18

  • People who do not transition to life appear to stay here forever (perhaps even as it becomes cast into the lake of fire)—as if they never existed. Ezekiel 26:19-21, Ezekiel 28:19
  • People here are unable to communicate with God. Psalm 28:1
  • It is a place of disgrace for the dead considered to be “uncircumcised”—a place to which people “descend.” Ezekiel 32:18-30
  • This is a place from which the righteous hope to be rescued. Job 33:14-30
  • This is a place from which everyone would want to be redeemed. Psalm 103:4, Job 33:28

After Christ’s Death:

A. If the person’s name is written in the book of life: paradise. Luke 23:43, 2 Cor. 12:4, Psalm 16:10-11

  • God’s tree of life is there. Rev. 2:7

B. If the person’s name is not written in the book of life: possibly a place called “Death” and separately, “Hades”; apparently also the sea holds some of the dead.  Rev. 20:13.

  • Those who worship the antichrist are not named in the book of life. Rev. 13:8

After the Great White Throne Judgment:

A. If the person’s name is written in the book of life: the new Jerusalem in the new heaven and new earth. Rev. 21:27

B. If the person’s name is not written in the book of life: thrown into the lake of fire. Rev. 20:15

  • The full name of the place is the lake of fire and sulfur. Rev. 20:10, Rev. 21:8
  • Those destined for this place will join the devil, the antichrist beast and the false prophet. Rev. 20:10.

o   Satan was prophesied to go there. Isaiah 14:12-15

  • They will also join the cowards, unbelievers, vile, murders, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters and all liars. Rev. 21:8
  •  This is referred to as the “second death.” Rev. 21:8

Passages and Considerations Regarding the Great Tribulation and the Day of the Lord

Students of Bible prophecy recognize that God has ordained a period in the future wherein Jesus Christ will return to the earth as King of Kings and Lord of Lords to rule over all nations of the world for 1,000 years (see Revelation 20:4)—the millennial reign of Christ (see discussion regarding the Millennium).  Prior to this millennial period, God will judge the world.  The period of God’s judgment is referred to as the Great Tribulation (Matt. 24:21), and it culminates in an excruciating Day of the Lord—a particularly devastating period that is concluded by the Second Coming of Christ (Matt. 24:29-30).  Some of the critical considerations regarding this period along with their supporting Scriptures are noted below.

  • The judgment constituting the tribulation is understood from a prophecy in Daniel 9 to extend for a period of 7 years. See Daniel 9:24-27.
    • The prophecy indicates that 490 years (or 70 “sevens”—also referred to as “weeks”) were particularly ordained regarding the Jews, Jerusalem and the work of the Messiah; the prophecy is divided into 2 sections of time: 483 years (or 69 of the “sevens”) of the prophecy were fulfilled when the Messiah was “cut off” (which many Bible students understand to equate to the crucifixion of and ascension to heaven by Jesus); thus, 7 years (or 1 “seven”) of the prophecy remain; according to the prophecy the antichrist will enter into a 7-year (or 1 “seven”) covenant with “the many”; then 3.5 years into that covenant, he will break it and cause sacrifices to cease.  Thus, it appears that the covenant is with the people of Israel and may have something to do with the temple and sacrifices.

·         God will desolate the earth. Isaiah 24:1-13, 19-20

·         God’s desolation of the earth is heralded by the breaking of 7 seals (Rev. 6&8:1-5), the sounding of 7 trumpets (Rev. 8:6-9:21&11:15-19) and the pouring of 7 bowls of wrath (Rev. 16).  Each has its own consequence:

Event

Consequence

Breaking of 1st Seal

Revelation 6:1-2

A white horse comes, and the rider has a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.

Breaking of 2nd Seal

Revelation 6:3-4

A red horse comes, and the rider takes peace from the earth even such that people kill one another; and a large sword was given to him.

Breaking of 3rd Seal

Revelation 6:5-6

A black horse comes, and the rider has a pair of scales in his hand, and it seems that the price of wheat and barley increase dramatically.

Breaking of 4th Seal

Revelation 6:7-8

An ashen horse comes, and the rider’s name is Death, and Hades is following him; he kills ¼ of the people of the earth with sword, famine, plague and animal attacks.

Note that the heralds of the first 4 seals, these "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse," may be the 4 spirits who patrol the earth and appease the wrath of God as described in Zechariah 6:1-8.  Some speculate that the rider of the white horse is the antichrist who, in a mimicking precursor to the Second Coming of Christ (Rev. 19:11-16), appears on a white horse.

Breaking of 5th Seal

Revelation 6:9-11

The souls of martyrs for God cry out for judgment.

Breaking of 6th Seal

Revelation 6:12-17

A great earthquake occurs; the sun becomes black; the moon becomes like blood; a storm of asteroids strikes the earth; the sky is split apart like a scroll; every mountain and island are moved from their places; all on earth cry out for death rather than to face the Messiah.

Interlude

Revelation 7

Angels halt wind from blowing on the earth. An angel seals 144,000 men from Israel on their foreheads. A multitude who came out of the Tribulation and whose robes have been made white by the blood of the Lamb cry out a praise to the Lamb, and the Lamb spreads His tabernacle over them.

Breaking of 7th Seal

Revelation 8:1-5

An angel fills a censor with fire from the alter and hurls it to the earth with lightning, thunder and an earthquake.

Sounding of 1st Trumpet

Revelation 8:6-7

Hail and fire mixed with blood are hurled to the earth; and 1/3 of the earth is burned up, and 1/3 of the trees are burned up, and all the green grass is burned up.

Sounding of 2nd Trumpet

Revelation 8:8-9

A great mountain burning with fire is hurled into the sea; and 1/3 of the sea becomes blood, and 1/3 of the sea creatures die; and 1/3 of the ships are destroyed.

Sounding of 3rd Trumpet

Revelation 8:10-11

A great star falls from heaven, burning like a torch on 1/3 of the rivers and on the springs of waters. The star is named Wormwood; and 1/3 of the waters become wormwood, and many people die from the waters because they are made bitter.

Sounding of 4th Trumpet

Revelation 8:12

1/3 of the sun, 1/3 of the moon, and 1/3 of the stars are stricken, so that 1/3 of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for 1/3 of it, and the night in the same way.

Interlude

Revelation 8:13

An eagle flies and announces 3 woes for those who live on the earth because of the blasts of the next 3 trumpets.

Sounding of 5th Trumpet

Revelation 9:1-12

1st Woe - The abyss is opened and smoke darkens the air and the sun, and Abaddon’s (or Apollyon’s) scorpion like locusts come out of the smoke and attack all humans that do not have the seal of God on their foreheads, and they torment humanity for 5 months.

Sounding of 6th Trumpet

Revelation 9:13-21

2nd Woe – 4 angels bound at the Euphrates River are released, and they release a 200 million horseman army (breastplate colors are hyacinth, fire and brimstone) that kills 1/3 of mankind with plagues of fire, smoke and brimstone.

The 2 witnesses appear, are slain, are resurrected and ascend to heaven. An earthquake strikes Jerusalem; 1/10 of the city falls; 7,000 are killed.

Sounding of 7th Trumpet

Revelation 11-12

3rd Woe – An announcement is made in heaven: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever.” The temple of God in heaven appears with the ark of His covenant. Signs appear regarding Israel, Satan, Christ and Michael, the archangel. (Rev. 12)  A woe is announced regarding Satan’s being on earth filled with wrath, because he knows his time is short.

Interlude

Revelation 13-15

The beast from the sea and the beast from the earth appear. (Rev. 13) The Lamb appears with 144,000 special saints; angels appear declaring the gospel, doom of Babylon, and doom for worshippers of the beast. (Rev. 14)  One like the son of man reaps from the earth. An angel then reaps for the winepress. (Rev. 14)  Angels receive the 7 bowls of wrath to be poured out on the earth. (Rev. 15)

Pouring of 1st Bowl

Revelation 16:2

Harmful and painful sores afflict everyone who has received the mark of the beast (the antichrist) and worshipped his image.

Pouring of 2nd Bowl

Revelation 16:3

The sea is turned to blood and everything in it dies.

Pouring of 3rd Bowl

Revelation 16:4-7

The rivers and springs of water are turned to blood.

Pouring of 4th Bowl

Revelation 16:8-9

The sun scorches people with a plague of fire and heat.

Pouring of 5th Bowl

Revelation 16:10-11

The kingdom of the beast is darkened, and pain and sores afflict people (possibly because sunlight provided healing and relief).

Pouring of 6th Bowl

Revelation 16:12-16

The Euphrates River is dried up—preparing the way (to Israel) for the kings from the East (to attack Israel).

Spirits of demons, like frogs coming from the mouths of Satan, the antichrist and the false prophet, summon nations to come and attack Israel (the Battle of Armageddon).

Pouring of 7th Bowl

Revelation 16:17-21

An announcement is made from the throne in the temple in heaven: “It is done.”  The strongest earthquake in history strikes the earth. Cities fall. Jerusalem is split into 3 sections. Islands disappear.  Mountains fall. 100-pound hailstones fall upon the people of the earth.

·
Celebrations will cease. Isaiah 24:7-11, Rev. 18:22-23

·       People are scorched. Isaiah 24:6, Rev. 16:8-9

·       All are subject to judgment. Isaiah 24:2, 4, 18

·       The antichrist will destroy Jerusalem and the Temple, first permitting the sacrifices and then halting them and desecrating the temple. Daniel 9:27, Zech. 14:2, 2 Thes. 2:3-4, Matthew 24:15-16

·       Messiah will battle and defeat all nations. Zech. 14:1-5, Zech. 12:9, Rev. 19:19-21

·       All of armies of nations will essentially panic, fight each other and rot while standing when Messiah arrives. Zech. 14:12-13, 15

·       Great wealth will be collected at the battle of Armageddon. Zech. 14:14

·       We do not know the day or the hour when Jesus will return. Matt. 24:42

Why the Rapture Could Occur at the End of the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot)

The Rapture is the gathering of believers constituting the Church (also known as the Bride of Christ) from Earth by Jesus--generally described in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17.  I have previously presented here reasons suggesting that there will, indeed, be a Rapture and that it occurs prior to the antichrist's entering into a 7-year covenant with "many"(Daniel (9:27)--a 7-year period commonly referred to as the Tribulation (with the last 3.5 years constituting the "Great Tribulation").  Although many people believe that the Rapture will indeed occur prior to the Tribulation, everyone wonders if there is a particular time that it will occur.  Many seek to correlate the Rapture to the special festivals and events that God established for His chosen people, the Jews.  In this regard, I note that there are a number of considerations suggesting that the Rapture could occur at the end of the Feast of Tabernacles (also known as the Festival of Booths and Sukkot), the final day of which is denominated by the Jews as Hoshanah Rabbah (which means the "The Great Supplication"):

1. The Feast of Tabernacles is a commemoration of God's having rescued His people from Egypt and protecting them, leading them and having them live in booths in the wilderness--which could be a parallel to the exodus of believers constituting the Church from the Egypt of this world and being protected by God in chambers in heaven.  See Leviticus 23:41-43 and Isaiah 26:20-21.

2. The feast is for 7 days--which could represent a parallel to the 7-year period of God's special protection of the Church from the Tribulation.  See Leviticus 23:41 in light of the 7-year period of Tribulation identified in the prophecy of Daniel 9:24-27 (identified as a final "seven" or "week") that awaits the Jews in the future. It is followed by a day of rest (Lev. 23:36), which could represent the start of the millennial reign of Christ that follows the Tribulation.

3. During the millennial reign of Christ, Gentile nations are invited to come to Israel to worship Jesus during the Feast of Booths--a suggestion that Gentiles are uniquely invited to participate in and celebrate this particular feast.  See Zech. 14:16-19.

4. The Feast of Tabernacles is a celebration of harvest--which could represent an amazing parallel to the concept of God's people, like crops, being gathered to Him--such as at the Rapture.  See Leviticus 23:39 in light of the following consideration: There are 2 distinct "crop" (i.e., people) gatherings described in Amos 7:1-6: (1) the King’s crop (which, contextually, would represent the Church as the Bride of Christ--believers in Jesus who are raptured prior to the arrival of the “locusts”—the trials of the Tribulation), followed by (2) the spring crop, which would accordingly represent the Jewish saints who die during or otherwise survive the Tribulation, having rejected the mark of the beast and having refused to worship the image of the beast; interestingly, the prophet Amos speaks of the second group distinctly as “Jacob”—i.e., the Jews.

5. The Apostle Paul, in describing what we understand to be the Rapture, explains that it begins at the sound of a final trumpet blast: "in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed"  I Cor. 15:52 (emphasis added).  Paul also notes the trumpet in 1 Thes. 4:16: "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God ...."  Many Bible scholars and students struggle to understand the meaning of this trumpet blast, considering that it is a critical marker of the Rapture and believing that it must correlate to one of the Jewish celebrations.  In this regard, Psalm 81, which many consider to be a celebration of both the Feast of Trumpets and the Feast of Tabernacles, includes the celebratory invitation to blow the trumpet: "Blow the trumpet at the new moon, at the full moon, on our feast day" (Psalm 81:3)--the full moon marking the final day of the Feast of Tabernacles.  The shofar is accordingly blown on the final day of the feast, Hoshanah Rabbah (see the article on The Shofar in War and Worship; see also the article regarding The Secret of the 15 Steps--particularly at "Secret #4), and could well mark the trumpet blast described by Paul.  (Of course, the shofar is also blown on Rosh Hoshana and Yom Kippur as well, and there are certainly considerations pointing to these days as well.)  While the shofar is blown at these events, it is noteworthy to consider that, distinct from the shofar blasts, there are also special blasts from metal trumpets.  In Numbers 10, we see the following discussion: "The Lord spoke further to Moses, saying, 'Make yourself two trumpets of silver, you shall make them of hammered work; and you shall use them for summoning the congregation and breaking camp. ... And when you go to war in your land against the enemy who attacks you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, so that you will be thought of by the Lord your God, and be saved from your enemies. Also on the day of your joy and at your appointed feasts, and on the first days of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be as a reminder of you before your God. I am the Lord your God.'”  Numbers 10:1-2&9-10. Thus, it is possible that (a) these trumpets are the trumpets described by Paul and used by God as a summoning of the "congregation" of the Church at the Rapture, (b) these trumpets are the trumpets described by Paul and used by God to mark the "day of our joy"--which could coincide with any of the Jewish feasts or first days of the month--at the Rapture, or (c) these trumpets represent a parallel to the trumpets used by God to summon His Church at the Rapture.

6. The Feast of Tabernacles is a 7 day feast to the Lord that starts with a day of restful celebration. Leviticus 23:34-36, 41.  There is no question that for believers who are to be raptured, they will enjoy a time of celebratory rest that culminates in the Wedding Supper of the Lamb. Rev. 19:7-10--which occurs prior to the Second Coming of Christ to Earth to begin His millennial reign. Rev. 19:11-19.

7. Jesus made a special announcement on the final day of the Feast of Tabernacles: "Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, 'If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.'" John 7:37.  Jesus' statement is akin to the statement made to John in Revelation: "Come up here" (Rev. 4:1); the statement made to John is considered by many to be a pre-Tribulation Rapture like invitation.

8. It is customary for Jews in their celebration to perform a ceremony similar to the one performed in connection with the overtaking of Jericho, in that during each day of the festival, they conduct a prayer ritual called the hoshanot, in which the congregants walk in a circle around a Sefer Torah holding a branch of a palm tree, and on the 7th day they encircle it 7 times.  In Joshua 6:3-5, the final circuit is followed by a trumpet blast and shout.  The final trumpet on Hoshanah Rabbah would represent this trumpet blast that together with the shout of the archangel could align with the explanations provided by Paul.  And just like Rahab and her family were saved from the destruction of Jericho (Joshua 6:25), so the Church would be rescued from the destruction that will be the Tribulation.

Thus, while there are a number of candidates for the time at which the Rapture might occur, there is no question that the final day of the Feast of Tabernacles, Hoshanah Rabbah, must be on the list of possibilities.

Biblical Considerations and Passages Regarding the Millennial Reign of the Messiah

Many passages from Scripture address the future millennial reign of the Messiah.  The listing below is not comprehensive, but it allows you to see the pervasiveness of the discussion in Scripture regarding this special time.  Christians, of course, recognize the Messiah as Jesus Christ.  Many of the Scriptures refer to the One performing the works variously and fairly interchangeably as the Messiah, the Servant, the Son of David and God.  I have compiled Scripture references into categories and concepts for convenience.

The Reign

·        The Messiah will stand on the Mount of Olives, and it shall split in two at His arrival. Zech. 14:4

·       The Messiah, sometimes referred to as Yahweh, will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem. Isaiah 24:23, Psalm 2:6-9, Psalm 9:11, Psalm 14:7 (and matching verse Psalm 53:6), Psalm 50:2, Psalm 87:1-3, Psalm 99:2, Psalm 102:13&16, Psalm 110:2, Psalm 132:13-14, Psalm 134:3, Psalm 135:21, Zech. 8:1-3, Isaiah 2:2-4, Isaiah 12:6, Isaiah 18:7, Isaiah 33:5&20-22, Isaiah 40:9-10, Isaiah 52:7-10, Isaiah 59:20, Isaiah 62:11, Joel 3:16-17&21, Obadiah 21, Micah 4:1

·       The Messiah is from the line of David. Isaiah 9:7, Zechariah 6:12-13, Jeremiah 23:5-6, Ezek. 34:23-24

·       The Messiah, before He reigns, is marred to the point of not looking human.  Isaiah 52:13-15 (see also verses 7-10 for context that it’s the Messiah; see also Isaiah 53).  Israel will look upon the Messiah—recognizing that they are the ones who pierced Him, and they will mourn for Him. Zech. 12:1-14

·        This may be what is described in Scripture as the Kingdom of God. Matt. 26:29, Mark 14:25

·       Everyone will know the Messiah. Heb. 8:11

·       The Messiah will rule over all nations. Psalm 2:8, Psalm 9:8, Isaiah 9:6-7, Daniel 7:14 & 27, Zech. 14:9, Isaiah 2:4

  • His reign shall continue on Earth for 1,000 years.  Rev. 20:4  After this period, Satan will be released and will deceive the nations, enticing them to attack Christ (Rev. 20:7-9); all participants in this rebellion along with Satan will be defeated and cast into the Lake of Fire. Rev. 20:9-10.  Thereafter, the Kingdom of Jesus will be moved to a new heaven and a new earth.  Rev. 21-22.

·       The Messiah (also called the Branch of David) will build the Temple, and he will rule from a throne as a king and also be a priest and counselor. Zechariah 6:12-13; Jeremiah 23:5-6, Acts 2:29-36, Isaiah 33:6, Micah 4:3

·       The Messiah will repair the Tabernacle of David. Amos 9:11

·       The Messiah will establish His sanctuary among His people from this point and continuing forever. Ezek. 37:26-28, Psalm 9:7

·       Martyrs and saints will reign with the Messiah during this time. Rev. 20:4-6, Daniel 7:27, Rev. 5:10. Jesus’ disciples will also reign with Him—judging Israel. Matt. 19:28 [I used to hold to the opinion that those who reigned with Christ were only those who were martyred for Christ during the Tribulation, and that believers constituting the Church or the Bride of Christ would not return with Christ to reign with Him on earth, but would, rather, remain in the New Jerusalem--separate and distinct from the Jews until the end of the millennial reign of Christ.  However, Revelation 5:9-10 shatters this opinion and suggests that even believers constituting the Church will return with Him to reign with Him on earth.]

·       The Kingdom of Messiah will be everlasting. Daniel 2:44, Daniel 4:3, 34; Daniel 6:26, Daniel 7:14, 27; Micah 4:7, Luke 1:33

The Earth

·       The earth will be refreshed when the Messiah arrives. Isaiah 35:1-2, 6-7, Amos 9:13, Zech. 8:12

Healing

·       People will be healed when the Messiah arrives. Isaiah 35:3-6

·       Living water will flow out of Jerusalem. Zech. 14:8, Joel 3:18

·       There will be no death. Zech. 8:4

Peace

·         There will be peace. Zech. 8:12&16, Zech. 9:10, Isaiah 2:4

·        Even the animals will live in peace. Ezek. 34:25, Isaiah 65:25 (although this verse could be applicable only to the New Jerusalem in the new heaven and new earth)

Justice and Honor

·       The Messiah will require that people live honorably, justly, truthfully and peacefully. Zech. 8:16-17, Psalm 99:4

·       People will not fear crime, danger or injury. Zech. 8:5 Particularly in Israel. Isaiah 60:18

The Highway

·       There is a special highway from Egypt to “Assyria” that presumably passes through Jerusalem. Isaiah 11:16, Isaiah 19:23, Isaiah 35:8-10, Isaiah 49:11, Isaiah 62:10

·       It is called the Highway of Holiness. Isaiah 35:8

People and Worship

·       People will be joyful. Isaiah 35:10

·       All nations will worship the Messiah. Psalm 99:9, Psalm 100, Psalm 102:15&21-22, Isaiah 24:14-15, Isaiah 30:29, Isaiah 60:1-3

  • The nations are particularly invited to worship at Sukkot--also known as the Feast of Tabernacles or the Festival of Booths (which is curious, because it commemorates God's protection of the Jews as they wandered in the wilderness; however, it also celebrates the harvest).  Zech. 14:16-19

·       The kings of the earth will be silent on account of Him. Isaiah 52:15

·       Probably because they will eventually join Satan to attack the Messiah, the praise of many will be pretentious—because of the apparent power of the Messiah. Psalm 66:3

·       Many things will be dedicated to the Messiah. Zech. 14:20

·       There will be sacrifices in Jerusalem. Zech. 14:21

·       There will be many celebrations. Zech. 8:19

·       Nations will seek the favor of the Messiah. Zech. 8:20-22, Isaiah 2:2-3

·       Many people will seek His instruction. Micah 4:2

Special Blessings for Israel

·       The land of Israel will be restored from its desolation. Ezek. 36:33-36

·       Jerusalem and Israel will be made a notable item of God’s delight. Isaiah 62:1-7&12

21 Facts about the Antichrist (Plus 10 Additional Considerations)

Here are 21 facts regarding the antichrist as provided by Scripture; knowing these facts will help the world to recognize the antichrist when he appears:
  1.  Also called “the beast” - Rev. 17:11
  2. Is a national and/or international leader—like a president or king - Rev. 17:11
  3. Will rule with 7 other leaders (as an 8th king) - Rev. 17:11
  4. He with the 7 other leaders, will lead a 10 nation union - Rev. 17:12
  5. Curiously, he “was” (before around 90 AD, when the Book of Revelation was written), “is not” (at around 90 AD), and will come again - Rev. 17:8 (a parallel to Jesus) [Is he a resurrected Antiochus IV Epiphanes--the Seleucid emperor, ruling over the areas now known as Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Turkey, who referred to himself as "God Manifest," outlawed the reading of the Torah and sacrificed a pig to desecrate the altar in the temple in Israel? (See https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Antiochus_IV_Epiphanes.) A resurrected Nimrod--the "mighty hunter," and founder of the first cities of the area now known as Iraq, who tradition suggests built the Tower of Babel to escape another flood from God? (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimrod.) A resurrected Nero Ceaser--who ordered the destruction of the temple in Israel and tortured Christians? (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero)] (Revelation 17:11 clarifies that this beast who "was, and is not" is the 8th king)
  6. He is called “the little horn” - Dan. 7:8 (just like “the little horn” in Dan. 8:9 is considered to refer to Antiochus IV Epiphanes)
  7. Will come from “the abyss”—a place that even demons fear - Rev. 17:8, Rev. 11:7, Luke 8:31
  8. Will strike down God’s 2 witnesses - Rev. 11:7
  9. Will be given authority to act for 3.5 years - Rev. 13:5
  10. He speaks arrogantly - Dan. 7:8
  11. Will blaspheme God and those who dwell in heaven - Rev. 13:6, Dan. 7:25
  12. Is given authority over everyone on earth - Rev. 13:7
  13. He will intend to change religious festivals and laws - Dan. 7:25
  14. Will conquer saints - Rev. 13:7, Dan. 7:25
  15. Everyone except the saints will worship him - Rev. 13:8
  16. A mark of the beast is required of everyone in order to buy or sell, and the mark is the name of the beast or his number, which is 666 - Rev. 13:16-18
  17. Is also referred to as “man of lawlessness “ and “son of destruction” - 2 Thes. 2:3
  18. His coming is in accord with the activities of Satan--with deception and wickedness - 2 Thes. 2:9-10
  19. He will sit in the temple and proclaim himself to be God, defiling the temple - 2 Thes. 2:4, Matt. 24:15-16
  20. He will enter into a 7 year covenant and break it after 3.5 years - Dan. 9:27
  21. He will be thrown alive into the Lake of Fire at the arrival of Jesus - Rev. 19:20
Further, if Daniel 11:36-45 relates, as many Bible scholars believe, to the antichrist, the following additional considerations would apply:
  1. He will exalt himself above and boast against all gods, including the God of gods - Dan. 11:36
  2. He will do as he pleases -  Dan. 11:36
  3. He will be successful in what he does until the end of his time - Dan. 11:36
  4. He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers or any other god - Dan. 11:37
  5. He will show no regard for the desire of women [some translations: the god desired by women] - Dan. 11:37
  6. He will honor a god of fortresses [possibly a new god that he creates] with gold, silver, precious stones and treasures - Dan. 11:38
  7. He will take action against the strongest of fortresses with the help of a foreign god - Dan. 11:39
  8. He will give great honor to those who acknowledge him and will make them rulers over the many - Dan. 11:39
  9. He will parcel out land for a price - Dan. 11:39
  10. Details of his final battles are described in Dan. 11:40-45.

Signs of the Last Days - Updated

Mark Absher
California

Scripture affirms that there are definitive signs marking the arrival of the end times.  The end times or "last days" culminate in the Day of the Lord, a very special moment in time that will undoubtedly be the greatest physical/spiritual event on Earth after the creation.  The Day of the Lord is, in essence, the explosive, universal heralding of the arrival of Jesus Christ to Earth as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  This time Jesus comes to Earth not as a baby, quietly crying in the humility of a stable, having assumed the form of man as a means to offer him salvation, but as the unquestionable, holy and righteous power of the universe--exacting substantial judgment upon mankind at His arrival.  We can actually look for the signs of the last days, having the confidence that, when we see them, we know the arrival of the King of Kings is near. Many of the signs are noted below:

Signs of the Last Days
SignTextsConsiderations
Signs Generally
CelestialsGenesis 1:14 - "Then God said, 'Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years.'"God uses the movements and activities of the sun, moon and stars as His event markers, so when unique celestial events occur, we should pay attention, recognizing that God may have marked the beginning of some end time event.
End Times Generally
The gospel is preached to all nationsMark 13:10 - “The gospel must first be preached to all the nations.”
Likely marked by people traveling extensivelyDaniel 12:4 - "But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time; many will go back and forth ....”
Knowledge will increaseDaniel 12:4 - "But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time; ,,, and knowledge will increase.”No doubt the development of the internet has fostered an environment wherein knowledge is increasing at a rate that is historic.
"The Beginning of Birth Pangs" (Matthew 24:8)
Difficult times marked by the presence of intensely selfish, hedonistic and evil people--even in the Church2 Timothy 3:1-7 - “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
People Questioning the Return of Jesus2 Peter 3:3-4 - “Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.’”
The love of many will grow coldMatthew 24:12b - most people’s love will grow cold.
Lawlessness increasesMatthew 24:12a - "Because lawlessness is increased, ..."
People will have dreams and visions and propheciesJoel 2:28 - “It will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy; Your old men will dream dreams; Your young men will see visions."Peter quotes this passage in Acts 2--talking about the last days.
Antichrists and persons who claim to be the Messiah appear, perform miracles and deceive many
1 John 2:18 - "Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour."
Many websites provide information regarding the increasing number of persons who claim or have claimed to be the Messiah.
Matthew 24:4b-5 - "See to it that no one misleads you. For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will mislead many."
Matthew 24:11 - "Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many."
Matthew 24:24-25 - "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. Behold, I have told you in advance."
Matthew 24:23 - "Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ,' or 'There He is,' do not believe him."
Matthew 24:26-27 - "So if they say to you, 'Behold, He is in the wilderness,' do not go out, or, 'Behold, He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe them. For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be."
Mark 13:5-6 - "And Jesus began to say to them, 'See to it that no one misleads you. Many will come in My name, saying, "I am He!" and will mislead many.'"
Mark 13:22-23 - “for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect. But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance.”
Luke 21:8 - "And He said, 'See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, "I am He," and, "The time is near." Do not go after them.'"
People gathering around the false christsMatthew 24:28 - “Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.”
Removal of peace from the EarthRevelation 6:4 - “And another, a red horse, went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to take peace from the earth, and that men would slay one another; and a great sword was given to him.”SEALS: Note that when the 2nd Seal, as described in Revelation 6, is broken, peace is taken from the earth.
Wars and rumors of wars
Daniel 9:26b - "even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined."
SEALS: Note that when the 2nd Seal, as described in Revelation 6, is broken, peace is taken from the earth. In addition, when the 4th Seal is broken, death follows by, among other things, a sword--further suggesting wars or violence.
Matthew 24:6-7a - "You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom,"
Mark 13:7-8a - "When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be frightened;those things must take place; but that is not yet the end. For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; ..."
Luke 21:9-10 - "'When you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end does not follow immediately.' Then He continued by saying to them, “Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, ...'"
Revelation 6:4 - “And another, a red horse, went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to take peace from the earth, and that men would slay one another; and a great sword was given to him.”
Famines and earthquakes
Matthew 24:7b - "and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes."
SEALS: Note that when the 3rd and 4th Seals, as described in Revelation 6, are broken, famine follows.
Mark 13:8b - "there will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines. These things are merely the beginning of birth pangs."
Luke 21:11a - "And there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines."
Revelation 6:5-6 - “When He broke the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, 'Come.' I looked, and behold, a black horse; and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying, 'A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not damage the oil and the wine.'"
Plagues
Luke 21:11a - "And there will be ... in various places plagues ...."
Note that the Revelation reference refers to plagues that will come during the Tribulation period--the 3.5 year period immediately prior to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. SEALS: Note that when the 4th Seal, as described in Revelation 6, is broken, plague follows. In addition, the 1st Seal is not fully described and could include a plague.
Revelation 6:8 - "I looked, and behold, an ashen horse; and the one who sat on it had the name Death, and Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, and famine, and plague, and by the wild animals of the earth."
Revelation 11:3-6 - "And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they ... have the power ... to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire."
Rapture
A gathering of believers from the Earth by Jesus--taking them prior to the release of the wrath of GodSee Scriptural discussion here: http://markabsher.blogspot.com/2021/04/scriptural-support-for-pre-tribulation.htmlThe timing of the rapture is disputed by many Christians for a variety of reasons. Some suggest that the rapture occurs prior to the Tribulation. Others suggest that believers will go through part of the Great Tribulation. Still, others suggest that believers must completely go through the Tribulation. Notwithstanding the question of whether and when such event might take place, the discussion at the link provided suggests a pre-Tribulation or pre-Bowls of Wrath rapture event.
Tribulation
Apostasy - a "falling away from the faith"
1 Timothy 4:1-3 - “But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.”
Note that many have suggested the I Timothy and Matthew 24 falling away describe a general trend, whereas the matter referred to in 2 Thessalonians is a unique event--"the apostasy"--suggesting that this is, in fact, discussing the rapture as a gathering event as opposed to a general trend of "falling away."
Matthew 24:10a - "At that time many will fall away."
2 Thessalonians 2:1-3a - "Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, ..."
A powerful 10 nation union is formed; it is referred to in Revelation as "the beast"; it gets power from Satan; one of its member nations recovers from apparent demise; all the world subjects itself to the union except for believers, whom the beast attacks.Revelation 13:1-4 - "And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority. I saw one of his heads as if it had been slain, and his fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth was amazed and followed after the beast; they worshiped the dragon because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, 'Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?' There was given to him a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him. And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven. It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain."The beast appears to be a world kingdom/power that will encompass or have influence over Israel, similar to the world kingdoms of the past (see Revelation 17:8-13 - "The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss and go to destruction. And those who dwell on the earth, whose name has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will wonder when they see the beast, that he was and is not and will come. Here is the mind which has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits, and they are seven kings; five have fallen [i.e., the world empires of the past that encompassed Israel: Assyrian, Babylonian, Median, Persian, and Grecian], one is [i.e., the Roman Empire, in existence at the time of John], the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain a little while. The beast which was and is not, is himself also an eighth and is one of the seven, and he goes to destruction. The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast for one hour. These have one purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast.") A group of 4 nations in the union collectively have one representative--thus enabling the 10 nation union to have 7 heads. "Coming out of the sea" refers to arising out of or representing a substantial number of people in the world. The demise of one of the 10 nations may be economic or political, but its quick recovery inspires awe and incites the people of the world to worship Satan and the 10 nation union. The description in Revelation 17 about the beast being an entity that was but is not and yet will be, suggests that the 10 nation union will be a resurrected version of one of the world kingdoms that preceded the Roman Empire. Those prior empires included areas that are today known as Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, and in some instances Egypt, Libya, Greece, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkmenistan. Given these considerations, and the dominance of Islam in nearly all of these nations it is fair to say that the 10 nation union will likely be Islamic in nature.
"Man of Lawlessness" (the "Antichrist") revealed; he performs signs and wonders2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 - “Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God. Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he will be revealed. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way. Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.”Note that the "man of lawlessness" is not revealed until "he who now restrains ... is taken out of the way." Many have suggested that the one who restrains is the Holy Spirit, whose influence is removed with the gathering of the believers in Jesus at the Rapture. The one who restrains could also possibly be an angel (see Daniel 10:10-14 wherein an angel explains that he would have come to Daniel more quickly had he not been restrained by another angel). In this regard, it is interesting to note that there is an angel assigned to the Abyss, whose name is Abaddon (Revelation 9:11), and that the antichrist beast is noted to come from the Abyss (Revelation 17:8).
The false prophet also appears, directing the world to worship the Beast and to take a mark of the Beast as a means to participate in commerce--rejecting it on the penalty of death.Revelation 13:11-18 - "Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb and he spoke as a dragon. He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. And he makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life. And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the beast to be killed. And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six."People who accept the mark of the beast will be subject to the judgment of God (see Revelation 14:9-12 - "Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, 'If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented withfire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.' Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.") Thus, believers absolutely must reject the mark of the beast (overcome; endure to the end) in order to be saved.
Declarations of “Peace and Safety”1 Thessalonians 5:3 - “While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.”
Death by sword, famine and plagueRevelation 6:7-8 - "When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come!” I looked, and behold, an ashen horse; and the one who sat on it had the name Death, and Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, and famine, and plague, and by the wild animals of the earth."SEALS: Though death by sword, famine and plague occurred earlier as "birth pangs," this death following the opening of the 4th Seal is uniquely severe--causing the loss of 25% of the world's population.
Persecution and execution of Christians
Matthew 24:9 - "Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name."
SEALS: Note that when the 5th Seal, as described in Revelation 6, is opened, the many people who have been martyred for the name of Jesus will call out to Jesus and ask "How long" until His vengeance is exacted.
Mark 13:9 - “But be on your guard; for they will deliver you to the courts, and you will be flogged in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them.”
Mark 13:13a - “You will be hated by all because of My name.”
Luke 21:12-15, 17 - "'But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for My name’s sake. It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony. So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; for I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute.... and you will be hated by all because of My name...."
2 Timothy 3:1 - "But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come."
Revelation 12:17 - "So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus."
Revelation 13:9-10 - "If anyone has an ear, let him hear. If anyone is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints."
People will betray and hate each other
Matthew 10:21 - "Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death."
Matthew 24:10b - "and will betray one another and hate one another."
Mark 13:12 - “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.”
Luke 21:16 - "But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death, ..."
The gospel will require that believers endure to the end
Matthew 24:13-14 - "But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come."
It is possible that believers must refuse to renounce their faith in Jesus Christ even to the point of death.
Matthew 10:22b - "but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved."
Mark 13:13b - “but the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.”
Luke 21:19 - “By your endurance you will gain your lives.”
Revelation 12:10-11 - "Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, 'Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night. And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death.'"
The existence of a temple in Israel and idolatry taking place therein
Matthew 24:15 - "Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),"
Mark 13:14a - "But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), ..."
Daniel 9:27 - “And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”Daniel 12:11 - “From the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days" (i.e., there is approximately a 3.5 year period from the time the antichrist breaks his covenant with Israel and the time of the defilement of the temple).
Christians, particularly in Israel and Jerusalem, fleeing for their lives from persecution
Matthew 10:22a - "You will be hated by all because of My name ...."
It is quite possible that, if a rapture event occurs, true Christians at this time will be found only in Israel, which would explain why the complete focus of the end times events during the Tribulation period principally develop in Israel.
Matthew 24:16-22 - "Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. Whoever is on the housetop must not go down to get the things out that are in his house. Whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath. For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short."
Mark 13:14b-20 - "then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. The one who is on the housetop must not go down, or go in to get anything out of his house;  and the one who is in the field must not turn back to get his coat. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! But pray that it may not happen in the winter.  For those days will be a time of tribulation such as has not occurredsince the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will. Unless the Lord had shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days."
Luke 21:21-24 - “Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of the city must leave, and those who are in the country must not enter the city; because these are days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to this people; and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”
Jerusalem is trampled by the armies of nations for 3.5 yearsRevelation 11:1-2 - "Then there was given me a measuring rod like a staff; and someone said, 'Get up and measure the temple of God and the altar, and those who worship in it. Leave out the court which is outside the temple and do not measure it, for it has been given to the nations; and they will tread under foot the holy city for forty-two months.'"The 10 nation union gains control over Israel and Jerusalem. The 3.5 year period is further confirmed by Daniel 12:6-8 - "And one said to the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, 'How long will it be until the end of these wonders?' I heard the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, as he raised his right hand and his left toward heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever that it would be for a time, times, and half a time; and as soon as they finish shattering the power of the holy people, all these events will be completed."
Signs Immediately Preceding and Occuring on the Day of the Lord
Wonders in the Sky and on Earth
Joel 2:31-32 - “I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, blood, fire and columns of smoke. The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.”
SEALS: These events seem to be consistent with the opening of the 6th Seal as described in Revelation 6:12-17 - "And I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became as black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. Then the kings of the earth and the eminent people, and the commanders and the wealthy and the strong, and every slave and free person hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; and they said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the sight of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of Their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?'”
Matthew 24:29 - "But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken."
Mark 13:24-25 - "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken."
Luke 21:11b - “and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.”
Luke 21:25a - “There will be signs in sun and moon and stars,”
Roaring of the sea and wavesLuke 21:25b - “and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves,”
People extremely fearful of what they anticipate is coming
Luke 21:26 - “men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.”
1/3 of the Earth burned upRevelation 8:7 - "The first sounded, and there was hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled to the earth; and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up."TRUMPETS: This event occurs in connection with the sounding of the 1st Trumpet.
1/3 of sea creatures and sea life destroyedRevelation 8:8-9 - "The second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was hurled into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood, and a third of the creatures which were in the sea and had life, died; and a third of the ships were destroyed.TRUMPETS: This event occurs in connection with the sounding of the 2nd Trumpet.
1/3 of waters become unusableRevelation 8-10-11 - "The third angel sounded, and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of waters. The star is named Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the waters because they were made bitter."TRUMPETS: This event occurs in connection with the sounding of the 3rd Trumpet.
1/3 of heavenly bodies darkenedRevelation 8:12 - "The fourth angel sounded, and a third of the sun, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a third of it, and the night in the same way."TRUMPETS: This event occurs in connection with the sounding of the 4th Trumpet.
Stinging locusts attack non-believersRevelation 9:1-11 - "Then the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the key of the bottomless pit was given to him. He opened the bottomless pit, and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth, and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth have power. They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. And they were not permitted to kill anyone, but to torment for five months; and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings a man. And in those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death flees from them. The appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men. They had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions. They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. They have tails like scorpions, and stings; and in their tails is their power to hurt men for five months. They have as king over them, the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name Apollyon."TRUMPETS: This event occurs in connection with the sounding of the 5th Trumpet.
1/3 of mankind killed by fire, brimstone and smokeRevelation 9:13-19 - "Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, one saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, 'Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.' And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released, so that they would kill a third of mankind. The number of the armies of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. And this is how I saw in the vision the horses and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire and of hyacinth and of brimstone; and the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths proceed fire and smoke and brimstone. A third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which proceeded out of their mouths. For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm."TRUMPETS: This event occurs in connection with the sounding of the 6th Trumpet.
A messenger of God arrives--along with a 2nd witness
Malachi 3:1 - "Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the Lord of hosts.
Just as John the Baptist heralded the arrival of Jesus at His first coming, this messenger, as well as a second witness, who may well be among the following list of prominent prophets: John the Baptist, Enoch, Elijah and Moses, will herald the arrival of Jesus' Second Coming.
Malachi 4:5 - "Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord."
Revelation 11:3-6 - "And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for twelve hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.” These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. And if anyone wants to harm them, fire flows out of their mouth and devours their enemies; so if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this way. These have the power to shut up the sky, so that rain will not fall during the days of their prophesying; and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire."
Mark 13:26 - "Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory."
Luke 21:27 - "Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. ..."
The beast kills the 2 witnesses/prophets, but they come back to lifeRevelation 11:7-12 -"When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them and kill them. And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which mystically is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. Those from the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will look at their dead bodies for three and a half days, and will not permit their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb.  And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate; and they will send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth. But after the three and a half days, the breath of life from God came into them, and they stood on their feet; and great fear fell upon those who were watching them. And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, 'Come up here.' Then they went up into heaven in the cloud, and their enemies watched them."These events appear to occur in Jerusalem.
Painful sores on those with the markRevelation 16:2 - "So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth; and a harmful and painful sore afflicted the people who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image."BOWLS: This is the consequence of the 1st Bowl of Wrath.
Oceans turn to blood, and everything in them diesRevelation 16:3 - "The second angel poured out his bowl into the sea, and it became blood like that of a dead man; and every living thing in the sea died."BOWLS: This is the consequence of the 2nd Bowl of Wrath.
All freshwater is turned to bloodRevelation 16:4 - "Then the third angel poured out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of waters; and they became blood."BOWLS: This is the consequence of the 3rd Bowl of Wrath.
Sun scorches people with fire and fierce heatRevelation 16:8-9 - "And the fourth angel poured out his bowl upon the sun, and it was given power to scorch people with fire. And the people were scorched with fierce heat; and they blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they did not repent so as to give Him glory."BOWLS: This is the consequence of the 4th Bowl of Wrath.
Darkness poured out on the kingdom of the BeastRevelation 16:10-11 - "And the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became darkened; and they gnawed their tongues because of pain, and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pain and their sores; and they did not repent of their deeds."BOWLS: This is the consequence of the 5th Bowl of Wrath.
The Euphrates River is dried up.Revelation 16:12 - "The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river, the Euphrates; and its water was dried up, so that the way would be prepared for the kings from the east."BOWLS: This is the consequence of the 6th Bowl of Wrath.
A trumpet sounds, and the elect are gathered
Matthew 24:31 - "And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other."
Jesus suggests, not directly but through the chronology that He lays out, this event occurs immediately prior to His 2nd Coming. Paul similarly discusses a gathering of believers in I Thessalonians 4:15-17 - "For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord." However, the timing of Paul's described gathering is not given clarity in in this scriptural context, and notably in Paul's gathering it seems to be done by Jesus and not by angels. Thus, either there is a post-Tribulation gathering rapture as described by Jesus, or this represents a second gathering of believers (see also Amos 7:1-4)--this time a taking of the believing Jews prior to the Second Coming of Jesus.
Mark 13:27 - "And then He will send forth the angels, and will gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest end of the earth to the farthest end of heaven."
Daniel 12:1 - "Now at that time Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued."
Second Coming of Jesus Christ and Armageddon
Evil spirits summon the nations to gather them for battle against Jesus Christ at His 2nd Coming.Revelation 16:13-16 - "And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs; for they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the entire world, to gather them together for the war of the great day of God, the Almighty. ('Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and people will not see his shame.') And they gathered them together to the place which in Hebrew is called Har-Magedon."Note that this gathering parallels the gathering of the elect as described by Jesus in Matthew 24:31.
Earthquake in JerusalemRevelation 11:13 - "And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell; seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven."This earthquake is reminiscent of the earthquake that struck Jerusalem following the crucifixion of Jesus (Matthew 27:51-54)--an appropriate precursor to the return of Jesus Christ in power.
Jerusalem is surrounded by armies
Daniel 9:26b - "and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined."
The 10 nation union led by the antichrist will prepare to assault Israel.
Luke 21:20 - “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near.”
The nations gathered against Israel appear to include nations or people groups from areas such as Russia, the "-Stans," Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan and perhaps others.Ezekiel 39:1-6 And you, son of man, prophesy against Gog and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal; and I will turn you around, lead you on a rope, take you up from the remotest parts of the north, and bring you against the mountains of Israel. Then I will strike your bow from your left hand and make your arrows fall from your right hand. You will fall on the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops, and the peoples who are with you; I will give you as food to every kind of predatory bird and animal of the field. You will fall on the open field; for it is I who have spoken,” declares the Lord God. “And I will send fire upon Magog and those who inhabit the coastlands in safety; and they will know that I am the Lord.

Revelation 19:17-21 - Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in midheaven, “Come, assemble for the great feast of God, so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, both free and slaves, and small and great.” And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies, assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse, and against His army. And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire, which burns with brimstone. And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh.
Gog refers to a nation or people group that is situated north of the Black Sea; Magog is the land of the Sythians, which is situated in Afghanistan and some of the surrounding areas. The prophet, Joel, describes the invasion of Israel to be as destructive as waves of locusts (see Joel 1). The prophet, Amos, also sees the invasion as locust like (see Amos 7:1-7). See also Zechariah 14:2.

Note that Ezekiel 38 appears to refer to the battle described in Revelation 20:7-10, which occurs AFTER the millennial reign of Christ--the judgment of which is marked by the raining down of fire on the armies of God and Magog (compare to Ezekiel 38:22). These areas appear to include lands such as Turkey, Russia, Germany, Iran, Arabia and Africa.

Conversely, Ezekiel 39 appears to refer to the separate and distinct battle of the nations gathered to war against Christ at His 2nd Coming--Armageddon--and who die at the Word of Christ and whose bodies are given as food to the birds of the air (Ezekiel 3:4-5) (compare to Revelation 19:17-21).
The arrival of the King of KingsRevelation 19:11-16 - "And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, 'KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.'"
The Battle of Armageddon and judgment upon the Beast, the Antichrist and mankind
Revelation 19:17-21 - "Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, 'Come, assemble for the great supper of God, so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great.' And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone. And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh."
2 Thessalonians 2:8 - "Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; ..."
